Most people spend months choosing their marble. The slab, the finish, the edge profile. They visit suppliers, collect samples, compare options until the decision feels right.

Very few spend any time on what happens between the stone being chosen and the stone being usable. That gap is where most of the avoidable problems with marble kitchens begin.

The order of trades matters more than most people realise

Marble benchtops are installed by stonemasons. Surface protection film is applied after installation, by an Accredited Duraflex installer. Those are two separate trades, and the sequence in which other work happens around them affects both.

The most common mistake is having protection film applied too early, before other trades have finished in the kitchen. Plumbers, electricians, cabinet makers, and tilers all do work that can damage an unprotected surface. Film applied before that work is complete is film that is absorbing damage intended for the stone.

The correct sequence is: stone installed, all other trades completed, then film applied. That way the film goes onto a surface in perfect condition and stays that way.

New stone versus existing stone

The best time to apply surface protection film is before the benchtop has been used at all. A new marble surface that has not yet seen a kitchen is a surface without history. The film goes on cleanly, with nothing to trap underneath it.

That said, film can also be applied to existing marble. The condition of the stone will determine whether any preparation is needed first. An Accredited installer will assess the surface before starting and advise on what that involves. Minor marks, light etching, and surface residue can often be addressed before application. Significant damage may require polishing by a stone restoration specialist first.

If your benchtop is already installed and in use, the question is not whether protection is still possible. It is what condition the stone is in and whether it needs any work before the film goes on.

What to tell your stonemason

Stone suppliers and stonemasons are not always familiar with surface protection film. Some are, many are not. It is worth having a direct conversation with your stonemason before installation about a few things.

First, the finish. SPF Ultra is designed for polished marble. SPF Neo is designed for honed and textured finishes. Knowing which finish you are getting helps confirm which product is right before the stone is laid.

Second, the edges. Protection film covers the flat surface of a benchtop. Edge profiles with deep undercutting or very sharp returns can limit how the film wraps. A standard eased or bevelled edge presents no issues. An installer will confirm anything unusual during their assessment.

Third, any sealing the stonemason intends to apply. Some stonemasons seal marble as a standard part of their process. There is no harm in having sealer applied first. Film applied over a sealed surface still performs as intended. It is simply worth knowing in advance so there are no surprises.

The tap question

One question that comes up often is about the area around tapware. Taps are typically installed after the stone, which means there are cutouts in the benchtop that a Accredited installer needs to work around.

This is a standard part of the installation process. An experienced installer will trim the film precisely around tap holes, sink cutouts, and any other penetrations in the stone. The result is clean and the protection is continuous up to the edge of each cutout.

If taps are being installed after the film, the same principle applies in reverse. The film goes on first, the taps go in after, and the installer trims accordingly.

What the day of installation looks like

A Duraflex installation is completed in a single visit. There is no curing time and no need to keep the kitchen out of use for any extended period. The installer will clean and prepare the surface, apply the film, and trim it to the edges of the benchtop. The process is quiet and leaves no mess.

Most residential installations take between one and three hours depending on the size and complexity of the benchtop. A peninsula with a waterfall edge takes longer than a straight run. An installer will give you a time estimate when they assess the job.

Once the film is applied, the surface can be used immediately. There is no waiting period.

One decision that simplifies everything after it

The appeal of marble is that it makes a kitchen feel considered and permanent. The anxiety that sometimes comes with it is the sense that the stone requires constant management.

Protection film removes that anxiety entirely. The stone is still there, still visible, still exactly as chosen. What changes is that it no longer needs to be managed. That shift, from a surface you watch to a surface you use, is what most customers say they notice most.
