Does Engineered Stone Need Sealing? The Honest Answer

Why engineered stone does not need a sealer

A sealer works by penetrating the pores of a stone and slowing how quickly liquids soak in. Natural stones such as marble and granite are porous, so there is somewhere for the product to go. Engineered stone is different. It is roughly 90 per cent crushed quartz locked in resin, and it leaves the factory near non-porous, with water absorption so low that spills simply sit on the surface waiting to be wiped away.

That is why the major manufacturers state plainly that routine sealing is not required, and some caution against aftermarket treatments altogether. An engineered stone sealer is largely a product in search of a problem: with effectively no pores to fill, most of it sits on top until it wears off. If someone recommends sealing your quartz benchtop on an annual schedule, ask one polite question: what exactly will the sealer soak into?

What engineered stone actually needs

None of this makes the surface invincible. The resin that makes engineered stone non-porous is also its soft spot, and the genuine threats have nothing to do with absorption.

  • Heat. Polymer resin can scorch, discolour or even crack under a hot pan taken straight from the stove or oven. On engineered stone, trivets are not optional. They are the single most important habit in the kitchen.
  • Knife scratches. Quartz is hard, but the resin binding it is not. Cutting directly on the surface leaves fine marks that dull the finish over time. Always use a chopping board.
  • Harsh chemicals. Oven cleaners, paint strippers, bleach left to sit, and strongly alkaline or acidic products can dull or damage the resin. Warm water and a pH-neutral detergent handle almost everything, and they cost a few dollars.

That is the honest care routine in full. Wipe spills as they happen, clean with mild detergent, use trivets and boards. There is no product to reapply and no annual maintenance cost.

The water-beading demonstration, and why it proves little here

You may have seen the demonstration: a treated benchtop, a splash of water, tight glossy beads. It looks persuasive. On engineered stone it is close to meaningless, because untreated quartz barely absorbs water in the first place. Beading only shows how a liquid sits on a surface. The July 2024 ban, and what it means for your benchtop

In July 2024, Australia banned the manufacture, supply and installation of engineered stone slabs containing crystalline silica. The ban protects workers: cutting and fabricating these slabs creates fine silica dust that is hazardous in workshops. It says nothing against the benchtop already installed in your home, which is legal to keep and poses no such risk in everyday use.

The practical consequence is scarcity. If your Caesarstone or quartz benchtop is scorched, chipped or deeply scratched, you cannot order a like-for-like replacement slab. The surface you own is, in a very real sense, irreplaceable. That changes the logic of care. Prevention is no longer simply the sensible option; for many kitchens it is the only one left.
