Does engineered stone need sealing?

Start with the surface you actually own

“Engineered stone” is often used loosely. A brand name, colour or marble-like pattern does not establish the composition of your benchtop. Find the manufacturer, product name and finish on your invoice, specification or sample label.

Use the care instructions for that particular product. Advice written for natural marble should not automatically become an instruction to seal engineered quartz, mineral surfaces or porcelain. These materials need their own assessment.

Sealing and surface protection do different jobs

A penetrating sealer is intended to reduce absorption in a suitable porous material. It is not a universal treatment for every mark or maintenance problem.

DURAFLEX film is fitted over the benchtop. On the areas covered, it provides a physical layer between everyday contact and the original surface. Choosing film is therefore a decision about additional surface protection, rather than evidence that the underlying stone needs sealing.

For engineered stone, preparation must suit the actual substrate and proposed film system. We do not apply the marble instruction “seal first” to every surface.

Does a mark mean the stone needs sealing?

A mark can have several causes, and adding sealer is not a diagnosis. Before applying a new treatment, establish whether you are dealing with removable residue, a change in the finish or physical damage.

Tell the team when the mark appeared, what contacted the surface and which cleaning products have been used. Clear photographs are useful for an initial assessment. Existing damage may need professional attention before protection can be considered.

DURAFLEX film does not repair the stone underneath it.

Where DURAFLEX fits

DURAFLEX is worth considering when you want a physical protection layer on a suitable existing benchtop. The assessment should cover the surface condition, desired finish, proposed coverage and installation details.

Discuss edges, joints, sinks, taps and any areas that will remain uncovered. Ask which film is proposed and read the applicable care and warranty information. Compatibility with the surface manufacturer’s instructions also needs checking.

Installation requires experience, skill and precision. Preparing the substrate and fitting the film correctly are part of the service.

Keep a practical care routine

An engineered surface still needs appropriate care. Caesarstone recommends cutting boards, protection beneath hot items and caution with chemicals. Follow the instructions for your own product and finish. Caesarstone care guidance

If DURAFLEX is installed, use the supplied film-care instructions for the surface you now touch. Do not assume a cleaner suitable for bare stone is automatically suitable for the film.
