Does DURAFLEX Work on Granite Benchtops?

Quick answerGranite is harder and less porous than marble, so it resists staining and etching far better and rarely needs sealing. But it is not indestructible: it can still scratch, chip and dull under heat and heavy use. DURAFLEX surface protection film works on granite, taking that daily wear instead of the stone, so the benchtop keeps looking new. It is backed by a warranty of up to 10 years.

Granite is the stone that homeowners choose when they want strength. It is harder than marble, less porous, and more resistant to the everyday damage that sends marble owners searching for protection. But harder does not mean indestructible, and granite owners are increasingly asking the same question marble owners have been asking for years: can you put a protection film on it?

The answer is yes. DURAFLEX polyurethane surface protection film works on granite benchtops. The installation process, the product, and the result are all similar to marble, with a few differences worth understanding.

How granite differs from marble

Granite is an igneous rock, formed from cooled magma. It is significantly harder than marble on the Mohs scale and considerably less porous. Where marble can absorb liquids quickly if unsealed, granite is naturally more resistant to penetration.

This does not mean granite is maintenance-free. Granite can still stain from prolonged contact with oils, red wine, and highly pigmented substances. It can scratch from abrasive contact, particularly on honed rather than polished finishes. Acidic substances can dull the surface over time, though granite is far less susceptible to etching than marble. And like all natural stone, granite benchtops are a significant investment that most homeowners want to protect.

Stone porosity varies considerably between granite types. Some granites are quite dense and require minimal sealing. Others, particularly lighter coloured granites, can be surprisingly porous. The specific granite, its finish, and its existing condition all factor into what protection film installation looks like.

How DURAFLEX installs on granite

DURAFLEX granite benchtop protection film installation

The installation process for granite is similar to marble with one key difference: surface preparation. Marble requires sealing before film installation because of its porosity. Granite, being denser, may require less sealing preparation depending on the specific stone and its current condition. Your DURAFLEX installer will assess the surface and confirm the preparation required before any film is applied.

The film itself is the same product: DURAFLEX SPF Ultra, a five-layer polyurethane film with a self-healing topcoat, UV stability, and food-safe materials. The heat-sealed installation process is identical. Every edge is heat-sealed to create a permanent waterproof bond. The result is invisible protection that does not change the look or feel of the stone.

One installation consideration specific to granite: the surface texture. Polished granite provides the most consistent adhesion surface. Honed granite works well. Leathered or brushed granite finishes, which have a more textured surface, require assessment by the installer before film is confirmed as suitable. Not every granite finish is appropriate for film installation, and an honest assessment upfront is part of what DURAFLEX provides.

What film protects on granite that sealing does not

Granite benchtop surface protection film

Granite owners who seal their stone get stain resistance. They do not get scratch protection. They do not get a self-healing surface. And they do not get the complete physical barrier that prevents any substance from reaching the stone.

DURAFLEX film on a granite benchtop provides all of these. Oils, sauces, wine, and cleaning products cannot reach the stone surface. The self-healing topcoat recovers minor surface marks from cutlery and daily contact. UV stability prevents discolouration over time. And the 10-year warranty covers the film against yellowing, lifting, and bubbling.

For granite owners who use their kitchen heavily, who have children, or who simply want the confidence that their benchtop will look the same in ten years as it does today, the investment is the same calculation as for marble: film cost versus restoration cost, versus replacement cost, versus the ongoing anxiety of owning an unprotected premium surface.

Granite, marble, and engineered stone: one installer, one system

DURAFLEX installers work across all natural and engineered stone types. The same automotive-trained precision that produces invisible film on Calacatta marble produces the same result on black granite, on travertine, on Caesarstone and Silestone, and on porcelain. The product and the process are built for stone surfaces, not for one specific stone type.

If you have granite benchtops and are considering protection film, the starting point is a no-obligation assessment. Your installer will look at the granite type, the finish, the existing condition, and confirm whether film is suitable and what the installation will involve. There is no commitment required at that stage.
