What a penetrating sealer actually does

A penetrating sealer, also sold as an impregnating sealer, is a liquid that carries repellent molecules, typically silanes, siloxanes or fluoropolymers, in a water or solvent base. Applied to clean, dry stone, it soaks into the pore network and bonds within the surface. The carrier evaporates, the repellent stays behind, and water or oil then beads on the surface instead of soaking straight in.

  • Invisible. A good impregnating sealer does not change the look or feel of the stone. Honed stays honed, polished stays polished.
  • Breathable. It lines the pores rather than blocking them, so moisture vapour can still escape the stone.
  • It slows absorption, it does not stop it. A spill left sitting long enough will still find its way in. You are buying time to wipe up, not immunity.
  • It wears invisibly. Expect months to a couple of years of useful life on a working benchtop, depending on the chemistry, the porosity of the stone and how it is cleaned. Solvent-based fluoropolymer impregnators generally last longest, while entry-level water-based products need renewing more often.

What a topical sealer does, and the trade-offs the trade knows well

A topical sealer takes the opposite approach. It forms a film on top of the stone, usually an acrylic, urethane or resin lacquer, and some are sacrificial wax finishes designed to be renewed on a schedule. Because the coating becomes the surface you see and touch, it changes the stone: typically adding gloss or a wet look, and altering how the surface feels.

Topical products have legitimate uses. They suit terracotta, slate floors where an enhanced look is wanted, some outdoor paving, and commercial floors where a sacrificial layer is stripped and re-laid as routine maintenance. As a category, though, film-forming coatings carry trade-offs that stone restoration professionals deal with constantly:

  • Wear patterns. The coating abrades fastest in traffic zones and work areas, leaving dull tracks beside glossier edges.
  • Yellowing. Some chemistries, older acrylics in particular, discolour with UV exposure.
  • Trapped moisture. Applied over stone that is not fully dry, a topical film can seal moisture underneath, which shows up later as clouding, whitening or the coating letting go.
  • The stripping cycle. A failed topical coating cannot simply be topped up. It must be chemically stripped or mechanically removed before reapplication, and stripping is hard on the stone beneath it.

None of this is the failure of one product. It is the known behaviour of thin, liquid-applied coatings on hard-working surfaces, and it is worth understanding before anyone proposes to coat your benchtop.

The limitation neither class overcomes: acid etching

On calcite stones, marble, limestone and travertine, the most common damage in a kitchen is not a stain at all. It is an etch: the dull, lighter mark left where an acid has touched the polished surface. Lemon juice, wine, vinegar, soft drink and many spray cleaners all do it, often within seconds.

Etching is chemistry, not absorption. The acid dissolves calcium carbonate on contact and eats a shallow mark into the stone itself. A penetrating sealer changes how quickly liquids soak in, which is surface physics, and it cannot influence a reaction that happens the instant acid lands. Which sealer to use, and when

  • Marble, limestone or travertine benchtops: a penetrating sealer, renewed regularly. Never a topical coating in a kitchen.
  • Granite: an impregnating sealer where a water test shows absorption. Dense granites may need very little.
  • Terracotta, slate and some outdoor paving: topical or sacrificial finishes can be appropriate where the look is wanted and a stripping schedule is accepted.
  • Dekton, Neolith and porcelain: neither. These surfaces are effectively non-porous and do not etch, so they need no sealer and no protection film either.
  • Engineered stone such as Caesarstone or Silestone: the resin binder leaves a penetrating sealer little to grip, so follow the manufacturer’s care guidance.

A different class entirely: bonded protection film

If your stone is marble, limestone or travertine and etching is the risk you actually face, the honest answer is that no sealer, penetrating or topical, solves it. A bonded polyurethane protection film is a different class of product altogether. It is not a coating applied as a liquid. It is an engineered film, heat-sealed to the stone, that physically separates acids, oils and abrasion from the surface.
