It is a practical question that comes up on almost every DURAFLEX installation inquiry. If the film is going to protect the marble anyway, does the stone still need to be sealed first? The answer is yes, and understanding why is useful for anyone planning a marble protection installation or specifying one for a client.

Why sealing is required before film installation

DURAFLEX surface protection film bonds to the marble surface through a pressure-sensitive adhesive that is activated and permanently set during heat sealing at the completion of installation. For this bond to be clean, permanent, and consistent across the entire surface, the stone needs to be properly prepared.

An unsealed marble surface has open porosity. The microscopic channels in the stone can affect how the adhesive contacts and bonds to the surface, particularly around the edges and in areas of higher porosity. Sealing the stone before installation closes those channels, creates a more consistent surface, and allows the adhesive to form a uniform bond across the entire benchtop.

The result is a cleaner installation, better edge adhesion, and a longer-lasting bond that performs correctly over the life of the film.

What kind of sealer and when to apply it

DURAFLEX marble protection film

A standard penetrating impregnating sealer is appropriate preparation before DURAFLEX installation. Reputable Australian brands including Dry-Treat, Aqua-Mix, and Mapei all produce suitable products. Your DURAFLEX installer will advise on the specific product and confirm the stone is ready before the film is applied.

Timing matters. The sealer needs to be fully cured before the film installation proceeds. In most cases this means applying the sealer at least 24 hours before the film installation appointment, though the specific cure time depends on the product used and the ambient conditions. Your installer will confirm this during the pre-installation assessment.

For new marble benchtops being installed in a new kitchen, the ideal sequence is: stone installed, stone sealed, then DURAFLEX film applied before the kitchen is put into service. Installing film before the kitchen is used means the marble is protected from day one in its best possible condition.

Does the sealer need to be reapplied once the film is on?

No. Once DURAFLEX film is installed over the sealed surface, the sealer underneath does not need reapplication. The film takes over the protective function completely. The stone underneath the film is isolated from the kitchen environment and is not exposed to the water, cleaning products, and food acids that would otherwise degrade the sealer over time.

The resealing cycle that unprotected marble requires every six to twelve months does not apply to a DURAFLEX-protected surface. The film handles all surface protection. DURAFLEX is maintenance free. Water and dish soap is all that is needed to keep the surface clean.
