Not everyone discovers surface protection film before their marble is installed. Many homeowners find it after the damage has already started. The marble has etching from lemon juice or wine. There are water marks near the sink. The surface has lost some of its original polish in a high-use area.
The question is common: can you still apply DURAFLEX to marble that is already damaged?
The answer is yes, in most cases, but with some important context.

What DURAFLEX does to existing damage
DURAFLEX is a clear polyurethane film. Once applied, it sits on top of the marble surface and creates a new protective barrier. Whatever the surface condition is at the time of installation is what gets locked in under the film.
That means existing etching, staining, and surface marks will still be visible after the film is applied, because the film does not fill, buff, or chemically treat the stone underneath. It is not a restoration product. It is a protection product.

If the marble has minor etching that is visible at certain angles, the film will not remove that. What it will do is stop any further etching from occurring on the surface it covers.
When pre-treatment makes sense

For marble that has significant surface damage, the right approach is often to have the stone professionally honed, polished, or treated before the film is applied. A stone restoration professional can assess the marble and bring the surface back to a condition closer to its original state.
Once the surface is restored, DURAFLEX can then be applied to protect it going forward. This two-stage approach gives the best long-term result because the film is preserving the marble at its best, not locking in existing damage.
For marble with very minor etching or water marks that are barely noticeable, the decision is more nuanced. Some customers choose to proceed with installation without pre-treatment because the damage is minimal and the priority is stopping further deterioration rather than perfect restoration.
What about staining?
Surface staining is different from etching. Etching is a chemical reaction that affects the surface of the stone. Staining is absorption of a substance into the porous structure of the marble.
Staining that has penetrated deep into the marble may not be fully reversible. A professional stone cleaner or poultice treatment may improve or remove some staining, but not always completely.
Again, the film applied after any treatment will protect the surface from future staining, but it will not reverse what has already been absorbed into the stone.
The inspection process
Before any DURAFLEX installation on damaged marble, an assessment is important. The installer will look at the condition of the surface and advise on whether pre-treatment is recommended before the film is applied.
This is a practical conversation. Some damage is minor enough that installation can proceed immediately. Other situations call for professional stone restoration first. Getting that assessment before installation ensures the customer understands exactly what the film will and will not change about the appearance of their surface.
The goal is always the same: protect the stone from this point forward, and give the customer a clear picture of what to expect.
