Australia has its own product safety standards. Its own food contact regulations. Its own flammability requirements. Its own consumer protection framework. A product developed and tested in another country is not automatically compliant with Australian standards, and a warranty issued by an overseas entity is not automatically enforceable in Australia.

This matters for marble protection film because several products sold in Australia were developed overseas, are marketed through international websites, and are backed by companies with no registered presence in Australia.

What Australian testing actually means

When DURAFLEX references Australian testing, it means specific things. The product was submitted to accredited Australian laboratories. It was fire-tested by CSIRO to AS/NZS 1530.3, achieving the lowest possible ratings for ignitability, flame spread, heat release and smoke development, and the film is made with food-safe materials. The CSIRO fire-test report carries a report number and names the standard tested against, and can be provided to architects and specifiers on request.

When an overseas product is described as “tested” without specifying the country, the standard, or the laboratory, that testing may not be relevant to Australian regulatory requirements. The standards differ between countries. A food contact certification issued in Europe or North America is not the same as Australian food contact certification.

Australian tested. Australian warranted. Australian company.

DURAFLEX fire-test documentation is available to architects and specifiers on request. The CSIRO report number and the standard tested against. Ask us.

Ask any marble protection film provider: where was your product fire-tested? Against which Australian standard? What is the report number and which laboratory issued it?

The warranty question for overseas brands

A 10-year warranty issued by an overseas company on an Australian installation creates practical problems. If the company has no registered entity in Australia, the warranty is only enforceable in the jurisdiction where the company operates. Pursuing a warranty claim internationally is a different proposition to calling a local company.

The warranty is also only as good as the company standing behind it. A company that entered the Australian market recently, with no established local presence, is a different warranty counterparty to a company that has been operating in Australia and has a track record of honouring claims.

DURAFLEX is an Australian company. The warranty is backed by an Australian entity. The accountability is local. That is verifiable.

The marble market is not the same as the automotive market

Some overseas film products were developed for automotive or general surface protection applications and adapted for marble. The adaptation matters.

Australian marble, Australian kitchens, and Australian regulatory requirements are the design parameters for DURAFLEX SPF Ultra. The product was not adapted from something else. It was built for this application from the ground up. The testing reflects that. The installer training reflects that. The warranty reflects that.

The practical test

Before choosing any marble protection film, ask: is this company Australian? Is the product tested to Australian standards, and can you provide the certificates? Is the warranty backed by an Australian entity? Are the installers trained in Australia by the product manufacturer?

These questions are not designed to exclude international products. They are designed to establish accountability. For a permanent installation on a premium stone surface with a 10-year commitment, knowing who stands behind the product matters.
