It soaks into the pores of the stone and repels water and oil from just below the surface without changing the look. Topical sealers, which form a layer on top, tend to scratch, cloud and peel on a working kitchen bench, so stone professionals generally avoid them.

  • Marble: use a solvent-based or quality water-based impregnator with oil repellency. Marble is beautiful and fragile, and it is the most porous of the common benchtop stones, so sealing marble benchtops is essential preparation.
