Does marble sealer prevent etching?

A penetrating or impregnating sealer does not prevent acid etching. Its role is to improve resistance to liquid absorption. Etching is a reaction at the marble surface, which can leave a dull patch even when no coloured stain remains.

This explains why a benchtop can repel a water droplet and still develop a mark after contact with an acidic food or drink. A water-beading demonstration does not establish etch protection.

Does the same advice apply to every stone?

Marble is not granite, quartzite or engineered stone. The stone's composition, finish and condition change what it needs. A marble-focused etching explanation should not be treated as a claim that every stone behaves identically or requires the same sealing routine.

The best way to seal a marble benchtop

Seal marble with a penetrating sealer (widely used, independently tested products include Miracle 511 Impregnator, Dry-Treat STAIN-PROOF Original and Aqua Mix Sealer's Choice Gold, named as reference points, not recommendations) and repeat when the water-drop test says the seal has worn. The method matters as much as the product:

1. Clean the surface with a pH-neutral stone cleaner and let it dry completely.
2. Test a small area first, an offcut or an inconspicuous corner.
3. Apply the penetrating sealer in sections with a clean, lint-free cloth or applicator.
4. Let it soak for the label time, typically 10 to 15 minutes.
5. Wipe off all excess before it dries on the surface, or it can leave a haze.
6. Add a second coat on porous stone, then cure for 24 to 48 hours before heavy use.
