Super White Dolomite: Why It Etches Like Marble

Is Super White really a quartzite?

True quartzite is metamorphosed sandstone. It is almost entirely quartz, which is chemically inert and shrugs off the acids found in lemon, wine and vinegar. Marble is metamorphosed limestone, mostly calcium carbonate, which reacts with those same acids and dulls on contact. Super White sits closer to the marble end of that spectrum than its trade name suggests. Lab testing and trade reporting on stone sold as Super White consistently find it is dolomite or a dolomitic marble, carrying enough carbonate to behave like marble under acid even though it looks and feels harder underfoot.

That distinction is not a technicality. A genuinely hard quartzite will take a splash of lemon juice without a mark. A carbonate-rich stone will not: the acid dissolves a microscopic layer of the polish and leaves a dull, slightly matte patch behind. That is etching, and no amount of scrubbing brings the shine back, because the surface itself has changed.

The lemon test that tells you what you actually have

Ask your stone supplier for an offcut, or find a hidden section of your own slab, and place a few drops of lemon juice or white vinegar on the polished face. Leave it for several minutes, wipe it away and dry the surface, then look across it at a low angle under a light. A duller, matte mark where the acid sat means your slab is acid-sensitive, whatever the trade name says. A polish that looks untouched means you have a genuinely hard quartzite.

Do this before installation if you still can, since two slabs sold under the same trade name can test differently depending on the quarry batch. Five minutes with a lemon tells you more than the label on the rack.

Daily care that genuinely works

  • Wipe up spills as they happen, especially citrus, wine, vinegar, tomato-based sauces and anything containing descaler.
  • Clean with warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner, and skip supermarket sprays that contain citrus or vinegar.
  • Use a chopping board and trivets or mats for hot cookware, exactly as you would on marble.
  • Blot an oil spill rather than wiping it, so you are not spreading it into a wider patch.
  • Dry the surface after cleaning, since that is what keeps water marks from settling in.

Where sealing stops and protection starts

A penetrating sealer is worth having on a carbonate-rich Super White slab. It slows how quickly liquids soak into the stone, which buys you time to wipe up a wine spill before it becomes a stain. What it cannot do is stop etching, because a sealer works inside the stone while etching happens on the surface, exactly where the acid meets the polish.
