Sealed marble can still develop dull rings after contact with lemon, wine or vinegar. That is acid etching, a different problem from an absorbed stain. Choosing a sealer for water repellency does not establish protection against that surface reaction.

A penetrating sealer soaks into the top few millimetres of the stone and slows how fast liquids are absorbed, which buys you time to wipe up a spill before it stains. Here is the honest limit every Sydney marble owner should know. Sealing slows staining, but it does not stop etching. Etching is not a stain, it is a dull mark where an acid reacts with the stone, and it happens in seconds whether the marble is sealed or not. That is why sealing alone leaves your benchtop exposed to the most common way marble gets damaged.
The complete answer is two layers, working in conjunction. Seal the stone to slow staining, then add DURAFLEX surface protection film, an optically clear, self-healing film that physically stops the etching and scratching a sealer cannot. A penetrating, or impregnating, sealer carries a resin into the pores of the stone in a water or solvent base. The carrier evaporates and the resin bonds inside the marble, leaving a breathable barrier that slows absorption without changing the look.
A coating sealer sits on top of the stone instead of soaking in. It can lift the sheen and it resists staining while intact, but it wears in traffic areas, can scuff or peel, and needs recoating. Most stone care professionals do not recommend a coating for a Sydney marble kitchen benchtop for that reason.
Protection film is an engineered sheet, around 150 microns thick, heat-sealed over the finished stone. DURAFLEX film is the option that stops acid etching in a Sydney kitchen, because the acid meets the film and never reaches the marble, and it is replaced at end of warranty rather than reapplied every season.
Penetrating sealers slow staining but do not stop acid etching from lemon juice, wine or vinegar. DURAFLEX film is a physical barrier, so the acid never touches the stone and etching cannot occur under the film.
Acid can leave a dull etch mark on unprotected marble because it reacts with the stone's calcium carbonate. This surface damage is different from an absorbed stain and may require professional restoration.
